TE KURA O HATO WERAHIKO KAWERIO

Tēnā koutou katoa - Greetings everyone

Last week we welcomed St Francis Xavier School (Te Kura o Hato Werahiko Kawerio) for The Big Day Out. This all-day, hands-on learning experience at Kavanagh College combines digital technology, te reo Māori, science and physical education. The students were accompanied by legendary SFX kaiako, Mrs Paulene Ryan.

Students were asked in the digital technology challenge to collaborate and build a wharenui (meeting house) using Minecraft. It was clear to see that many of the students were experts at using this creative game. We were highly impressed at the intricate designs and inclusion of traditional Māori colours and designs when building their wharenui. Year 5 student, Isla Harris, crafted a beautiful meeting house on a picturesque lakeside setting.

In the Christian Brother's Gymnasium, the students participated in a physical education lesson with Year Seven class, 7DGR.

After lunch, the class were taught by science teacher, Mrs Kerron Thomson where the students conducted a number of combustion and melting experiments.

A big thank you to the Kavanagh staff and students from SFX who made this a very special day of learning and fun!

Next week we welcome our whānau from the Tainui area of Ōtepoti, St Brigid's School.
