BOOK WEEK 2023

This year's Book Week was a fantastic celebration of the written word, imagination, and the joy of reading.
Our Year 7 and 8 classes had a great time attempting to 'Free Their Teacher'. This Escape Room-esque activity involved teams of students having to solve literacy-centred questions to uncover the secret word that would unlock the padlock and release their teacher. This is always a highlight and a lot of fun. For some reason, students love chaining and padlocking their teacher to a chair! I am pleased to say that all teachers were released by the end of the session.
A focal point of Book Week was welcoming our visiting author Vanda Symon. With her captivating storytelling and remarkable achievements in the world of crime fiction, Vanda brought a fresh perspective and an air of excitement to our Book Week. Vanda wowed us with a talk on her journey as a celebrated author and inspired our students during her writing workshop.
As part of Book Week Te Timiatanga took part in a range of challenges in class. One of those challenges was the ever-popular Chalk Art Design Challenge. Students unleashed their creativity and imagination as they redesigned popular book covers. The winning images were spectacular.
Book Week culminated in our Dress as a Book Character Day. Choosing the best-dressed book character was no easy task, as the event was brimming with imaginative and elaborate costumes that brought beloved literary characters to life. The well-deserved winners took home a $20 book voucher. As part of our dress-up day, we asked our students and staff to donate a gold coin to Women's Refuge. We were overwhelmed by everyone's generosity. A total of over $300 was raised! We will spend this on literacy and reading supplies for the children who seek refuge in these safe havens.
We think Book Week can be best summed up by one of our Year 9 Art Prefects, Liam Davis:
"Book Week was a wonderful week full of surprises. Students enjoyed a range of activities such as; chalk art - where you chose a book and redesigned its cover with chalk on concrete, various class quizzes throughout the week, a Vanda Symon author visit/writing workshop and even a day-to-dress-up as your favourite book character. Overall, I'd say it was a brilliant week and I’m sure every other student at Trinity strongly agrees!"
