Course Outline
Commerce is the use and exploration of accounting, economic, and business concepts and models to make sense of society and solve problems. Commerce builds the knowledge, skills, and values needed to navigate and participate in the economic world.
The focus on student-centred learning is evident as students take an active role in their learning, participate in field trips, work in teams to design and market a product/service, learn about local, sustainable businesses, including future-proofing strategies.
Students will learn how businesses make financial decisions and analyse how these impact financial viability. Students will learn that scarcity necessitates decision-making and that cultural perspectives and lenses inform decisions.
Topics include:

Financial decision making for a local dairy farm (we will visit the farm).

Running a small business for a school community event (practical activity).

Real world business and how price is determined using supply and demand.

Influence of internal factors and external factors on a business’ financial viability.

Internals- Economics
AS 90987 - Demonstrate understanding of a government choice where affected groups have different viewpoints 4 credits
AS 90988 - Demonstrate the understanding of the interdependence of sectors of the New Zealand economy 3 credits
Internal - Accounting
As 90981 - Make a financial decision for an individual or a group
Externals - Economics
AS 90983- Demonstrate understanding of consumer choices, using scarcity and/or demand 4 credits
AS 90986 - Demonstrate understanding of how consumer, producer and/or government choices affect society, using market equilibrium 5 credits
