Prayer for Matariki

By Administration | Posted: Thursday June 19, 2025

We began the week in prayer acknowledging the Holy Trinity. This Friday 20th June marks the third year of Matariki being recognised as a public holiday in Aotearoa. Te Mātahi o te Tau (the New Year) is all about honouring and remembering our loved ones that we have lost since the last rising of Matariki; celebrating the present - gathering together; and looking to the future and the promise of the new year.

Matariki mā Puaka is the theme for Matariki 2025. It translates as Matariki and Puaka, and acknowledges the relationship between these significant stars. While the stars that mark the beginning of the New Year may vary, the themes that underpin the ceremony and celebration are the same. We acknowledge our past, celebrate the present and look forward to a bright and prosperous future.

The phrase Matariki mā Puaka is a reminder that regardless of our different backgrounds, origins, and practices we use this celebration to come together and share the many unique elements that shape our identity. This is the truth of The Holy Spirit, and our Pope's motto, 'In Illo uno unum', 'In the One, we are one'.

Mānawatia a Matariki!
