Pope Leo XIV was elected on May 8, 2025, during a papal conclave convened after the passing of Pope Francis. Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Illinois, he is the first American-born pope and the first to hold dual U.S. and Peruvian citizenship. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine, he served as a missionary in Peru and held various leadership roles within the Church, including Bishop of Chiclayo and prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. His election marks a historic moment for the Catholic Church, reflecting its global and inclusive character.
Pope Leo XIV's papal name honors Pope Leo XIII, known for his contributions to Catholic social teaching. His early messages emphasize peace, compassion, and the Church's commitment to marginalized communities. He has also expressed concerns about nationalism and political polarization, advocating for unity and dialogue. His inauguration is scheduled for May 18, 2025.
