Feast of the Assumption of Mary

The word “Assumption” comes from the Latin meaning “to be taken or received”. All over the world, Catholic Christians celebrated God taking up his humble servant Mary into Heaven, in recognition of her special role in bringing Jesus into this world and teaching him the way of accordly to the command of God. 

Excluding the Sundays it is one of two holy days of obligation which means we are obliged to go to mass to recognise this special event. The other day is Christmas. As a Christian community we have been commemorating this day since the 7th century. In the Eastern Church it is called the “Dormition”.

It is one of the four Marian dogmas of our church defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950.

Hail, Mary, full of grace,

the Lord is with you.

Blessed are you among women

and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners,

now and at the hour of our death.
