Millers Flat 7s tournament

Another very cold start greeted the team last Saturday at Millers Flat. The annual Netball and Rugby 7s tournament is one of the busiest days of the year for the town and doubles as a fundraising event for the local school. Last year, the team were runners-up in the Year 7 final and knew starting well, making first up tackles and shutting down space was going to be key for a successful day. Basin (Wakatipu, Arrowtown and Cromwell) were our first opponents and scored first. Fergus Barnett equalised moments later with a length of the field brilliant intercept try. Basin showed their class in the second half and pulled away to get the 'W.'

The boys quickly shrugged off the loss to Basin and scored the first try against their next opponent, Clutha Valley. This small Rugby club is from Clydevale, inland from Balclutha. The game got off to the perfect start with Louis Thompson scoring in the corner then Valley equalised just before the half-time whistle. Our boys hit back a few minutes into the second spell with a stunning solo try down the touchline by Brax Murdoch! The team hung on for a hard fought 10 - 5 win.

Maniototo/Matakanui-Combined were up next and those country kids sure are big! Jake Lucas got a superb inside ball from Jack Burke to dot down in the dying moments however we couldn't match their power game. Final score was 5 - 20. You had to win all games to get out of your pool so after thanking the organising committee it was off to the Millers Flat Tavern for some hot chips before heading back to town.

Thank you to our supporters and coaches who gave up their Saturday. It was fantastic to see our boys learning, persevering, representing the college with pride and having fun playing footy with their mates.
