Year 13 PE Cross-Country Ski Trip: Adventure, Learning and Resilience

We kicked things off on Monday with a lesson to learn the ropes of cross-country skiing. There were a few tumbles along the way, but the attitude across the group was great. Students were willing to give things a go, laugh at themselves, support each other and keep getting back up. From there, we headed out towards Musterers Hut, successfully making the journey with a well-earned stop at Meadows Hut for a snowball fight along the way.

The afternoon brought more adventure, including a twilight/sunset ski and some off-piste exploring before returning for nachos and a well-deserved dinner.

Tuesday was our big day on the slopes. We trekked back into the base area for another lesson, this time mixing things up with some competitive ski soccer! Students then split into smaller groups for an afternoon of adventure, navigating the trails and getting stuck into some more off-piste skiing. After heading back to the hut, there was still time for another twilight ski, exploring the igloos and older huts further up the hill while taking in some stunning views across the surrounding mountain ranges. The day finished with burgers and a bit of Mafia before bed.

Our final morning started before the sun was up. Head torches on, a group headed out to chase the sunrise, making the most of our last opportunity to explore the Snow Farm before packing up and heading home. It was a pretty special way to finish an awesome few days.

While the skiing was certainly a highlight, the real value of the trip was in the learning that happened along the way. The Snow Farm provided a fantastic real-life context for students to apply risk-management principles, make decisions in changing environments, communicate effectively, look after one another and take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of the group. They experienced firsthand that adventure is not about removing risk, but about understanding it, managing it and making good decisions.

A huge credit to the group. They made the most of every moment, represented themselves and the school well, and reminded us why getting students out of the classroom and into real-world environments is so powerful.

A few days of snow, fresh air, adventure, plenty of laughs and some pretty unforgettable memories.
