Traveller’s Group

Our Year 11 Dean (Jess Lach) and I (Mary Milne, School Counsellor) facilitated the Travellers Programme for a small group of handpicked year 9 students. We finished the 8th session with a recap of all the resiliency skills they can now take in their “suitcase” to support them through the tough times. The Chocolate celebration cake and the snacks were also pretty popular!

Traveller’s is a New Zealand based programme through Skylight Trust that launched in 2001. Through the small group format (8-10 students), middle schoolers are supported to build resiliency as they explore their own stories through a “life map” to help them along the way. The programme uses the metaphor that we are all Travellers on this journey of life and sometimes the road can be more challenging than others.

It was such a pleasure to see our group come together to form their own support network, while learning so many practical skills to negotiate the highs and lows of life. Being a part of their journey was truly a heartwarming experience.
