University of Otago Classical Studies Quiz

Our Classical Studies students enjoyed a successful evening at the Otago University Classical Association’s annual Classical Studies Quiz, held on Tuesday night, 18th August, in the Otago Students’ Union Common Room.

Trinity Catholic College entered three teams across the Junior and Intermediate sections. The Junior teams were Apollo’s Arrows, comprising Julian Osland, Will Paterson and Paul Bertoli, and The Four Winds, made up of Loki Borland, Luca Schaumann and Nash Minglana. Matthew Suwanarusk was unfortunately unable to attend on the night.

Our intermediate team, The Hydras, consisted of Hugo Anstey, Miles Osland, Janudi Ganganatha and Karthik Amal.

The quiz featured 60 questions covering topics including The Odyssey, gods and goddesses, language, history and heroes. The questions were tough, with many of the teachers in attendance left scratching their heads and scrambling for answers.

Our teams performed very well. Apollo’s Arrows took first place in the Junior section, while The Four Winds finished second after a tense contest. The two teams were tied for first at the halfway stage, but Apollo’s Arrows produced an almost faultless performance in the final rounds to secure the win.

The Four Winds, who won last year’s Intermediate competition, also performed strongly, finishing second despite being a member down. The Hydras finished sixth. They remained in contention throughout the competition, having been as high as third at the halfway stage, while tackling the same questions as the other teams.

It was a strong showing from all three teams and a reflection of the time and effort put into their preparation and revision. Congratulations to Julian, Will, Paul, Loki, Luca, Nash, Hugo, Miles, Janudi and Karthik on their performances. They did themselves, and the College proud.

A big thank you also to the parents who attended and supported the teams throughout the evening.
