Academic Prefect, Hayley Roding, shares some ideas about how to study effectively.

Welcome to term 2!

Term 2 is a crucial time to start thinking about where our learning can take us and how to best prepare. Preparation is important, as it means the best version of your work can be submitted, and therefore, the outcome is a true reflection of your ability.

A common problem among the student body is the lack of information around studying and how to structure study sessions to maximise the benefit. Structuring study sessions is very much dependent on your personality, how you learn, and what works for you. Studying endlessly without breaks is not beneficial, as your brain becomes overloaded with information and cannot move this information into your long-term memory. Rather than studying without structure, consider planning your sessions according to what works for you.

One idea of how to structure study sessions is - pick a subject, and do 20 minutes on, 5 minutes off. 20 minutes of either note-taking, video watching, writing, annotating, or practice papers; and then a 5-minute break. Drink some water, get up and stretch, go for a quick walk, or do something to quickly reset before starting the process over. During the 20 minutes, focus on specific things to ensure your revision is meaningful and helpful for in-class time. You might extend the period of study time, and then also extend the period of rest time to better suit you, depending on what it is you're studying or catching up on.

Remember to keep your time worthwhile, focusing on aspects of your learning which will improve your time in-class and assist your learning in the long run ahead of any tests or exams, and incorporate some means of fun.
