Level One Commerce Hits the Road
Our Level One Commerce students recently enjoyed an insightful and inspiring field trip to the University of Otago, Tūhura Otago Museum and Huntly Road Dairies, gaining valuable real-world perspectives on tertiary education pathways and business operations.
Our day began at the University of Otago’s Commerce building, where students were excited to explore the building and the subjects offered, and discuss the importance of IT in day-to-day operations. During our visit, we were warmly welcomed by Dr Michelle Schaaf (Senior Lecturer in the School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies and Associate Dean of Humanities) and Telesia Lei-Mata’afa (Division of Humanities Support Officer), both proud alumni of Dunedin Catholic Education. They shared powerful insights about the importance of belonging, community, and incorporating humanities into tertiary study, encouraging students to embrace new opportunities with confidence. We were also fortunate to meet Leota Merideth (Pasifika Engagement Coordinator at Tūhura Otago Museum), and she spoke about using a cultural lens and meaningful engagement in decision-making.
After lunch in Mosgiel, we travelled to Huntly Road Dairies in Outram, where Anne-Marie and Duncan Wells hosted us on their award-winning dairy farm. Students heard firsthand about the Wells’ business journey and the values underpinning their success. They emphasised the importance of teamwork, strong financial planning, sustainability, innovation, and outstanding animal welfare.
Students were fascinated to see the technology used in the milking shed and to learn how modern systems improve productivity and animal wellbeing. They even had the opportunity to feed and milk the cows - an experience many will not forget! The visit provided meaningful insight into the financial, operational, and logistical challenges of running a successful dairy business, highlighting excellence in both business management and agricultural stewardship.
The trip was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with authentic, real-world applications. The knowledge gained will directly support their upcoming assessments and deepen their understanding of education and enterprise.
We are incredibly grateful to the University of Otago and Huntly Road Dairies for their generosity in hosting us and providing such enriching experiences. Our students returned inspired, motivated, and equipped with a broader understanding of future pathways and business in action.
