Physics on Ice!

Year 12 Physics students swapped the classroom for the ice rink on September 19th to apply their knowledge of mechanics in a practical setting.

For some, it was a welcome return to the rink, but for others, it marked their very first time in skates. Everyone enjoyed the excursion, with a few students even utilising the helpful polar bear push chairs!

After this fun experience, the students will write a detailed report analysing the core physics principles of skating. This includes topics such as the generation of force needed for propulsion, the dynamics of leaning while accelerating and cornering on the ice, and the physics ideas involved in why wearing a helmet protects you.
