Dunedin Dunes: Year 12 Bio Trip to St Kilda

The Year 12 Biology classes visited the St Kilda sand dunes this week in order to explore ecological patterns for their upcoming internal assessment. 

Instead of soaking in the sun, students had to explore the different vegetation types using field-sampling techniques including quadrats and transects. Their ultimate mission is to determine why certain plant types grow in specific zones along the dunes.

It was great to see students actively working together to estimate percentage cover, measure sunlight intensity, collect samples, record data and accurately identify plant species. When we returned to campus, students then had to process their data into useful graphs and sketch diagrams to allow them to identify patterns and specific zones.
