Cheese, Chocolate & Commerce

Despite the rainy weather, the Level Two Commerce students set off on an exciting trip to Oamaru to explore two successful North Otago businesses. The day began with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Whitestone Cheese factory, where students learned how locally produced milk is transformed into award-winning cheeses. The highlight for many was the chance to sample a range of Whitestone’s delicious cheeses during a tasting session.
Next stop was the Rainbow Confectionery factory shop - a student favourite -where shelves of colourful sweets and chocolate provided the perfect opportunity to stock up on some delicious treats.
Whitestone Cheese’s General Manager, Simon Berry, also spent time speaking with the students about the real-world challenges businesses face. He discussed how external factors such as employment law changes, shifting interest rates, health and safety requirements, and unexpected weather events can all impact how a business operates. His insights gave students a valuable look at how businesses must constantly adapt to factors beyond their control. The visit will also support the students’ learning as they use this experience as part of an upcoming assessment.
On the way home, the group stopped at Totara Estate to step back in time and explore the early history of farming in New Zealand. Students learned about the estate’s important role in the development of the frozen meat industry and how it helped shape New Zealand’s export economy.
