12PE Naseby Trip 2026

Last week, our Year 12 Physical Education class headed away on our annual bike trip to Naseby, and as always it provided a few days of challenge, achievement, and plenty of fun along the way.
We departed Dunedin on Wednesday morning under a slightly drizzly sky, but spirits were high. Fortunately, the weather began to clear as we made our way inland, and by the time we arrived in Naseby, conditions had improved significantly. After settling in, students were straight out on the trails, fitting in two rides during the afternoon. The sun even made an appearance through the forest, creating perfect riding conditions. Students split into their five groups and explored a range of trails, clocking up some impressive kilometres and building confidence on the bikes.
Wednesday night brought one of the highlights of the trip - the highly competitive Nachos Competition. The standard this year was high, with creativity and presentation taken to another level. The judging was so close that we had to create a spreadsheet to determine the winners! In the end, Pedal Punks and Chain Reaction took out the top spots, earning themselves the fizzy jug, which was presented later at Waipiata.
Thursday greeted us with a stunning Central Otago day. Students headed out for two more rides, continuing to develop their skills and endurance. A key focus of the day was completing a practice assessment on the designated trail. Students recorded their times and were assessed to help prepare for the final assessment the following day.
By Friday morning, we were once again lucky with the weather, waking to clear skies. There were a few tired and sore bodies, and understandably some nerves ahead of the assessment ride. However, every student rose to the challenge. All riders completed the assessment trail safely, with only a few minor falls along the way. There were some outstanding performances, with some students achieving Excellence and even a few new records being set - a reflection of the effort and determination shown throughout the trip.
We wrapped up the experience with a well-earned reflection session at the Waipiata Pub, where students had the opportunity to look back on their achievements and the progress they had made. Throughout the trip, students were assessed in multiple ways, including the practical component on the trail - a rare and valuable opportunity to perform in a clear, measurable, “against the clock” environment - as well as a risk management strategy assessment, which they will continue working on back in the classroom.
A huge thank you must go to Mr Harris, Mrs Tupa’i, and Mr Earl for their time and support in making the trip such a success. We also greatly appreciate the contribution of Geoff Waide and Brendan McCombe.
Finally, a special shoutout to Elani Mafi for the creative video she has put together, capturing the spirit and highlights of our few days away.
Overall, it was an awesome trip filled with challenge, growth, and plenty of memorable moments.
