Year 10 Bike Mechanics Course

During Term 2, six students have been learning the basics of bicycle mechanics and repair from Southern Youth Development (SYD) experts. Year 10 students Liam Bishop, Devan Black, Eli Bungard, Austin Casey, Harry Hore and Ed Leckie have been repairing breaks, gears, punctures and chains over the last six weeks in the school ‘dungeon’ thanks to SYD’s mobile workshop.
Recently, the group applied what they have learned in order to give back to the community. The students visited Mornington School this week where they were faced with the task of working on 20 fleet bikes. Each varied in a state of disrepair, but the students got stuck in and completed as much repair as they could do by hand. They made excellent progress and were able to fully repair most of the bikes, much to the delight of their tutor, Conan, as well as the Mornington School community. It was an excellent opportunity to both learn a useful skill as well as use that knowledge to help others. Well done!
