In 2006, the Kavanagh College 1st XV did something very few Rugby teams ever do — they went through an entire season undefeated.

Coached by former Kavanagh teacher Mark (Braces) Bracewell and parent Ross Hanson, the team of just 19 players made history by winning all 15 matches in a tough 1st XV Rugby competition. This weekend they reunite to celebrate 20 years since defeating Waitaki Boys High School 1st XV in the Grand Final — in extra time — to claim the 2006 Otago Secondary Schools 1st XV Championship banner.

A special Championship Reunion medal will be presented by 2006 captain and Kavanagh College Head Boy, Brendan (Ox) Eathorne, to the Player of the Day at tomorrow's Trinity Catholic College Rugby fixture at Kettle Park. This presentation marks the beginning of an annual acknowledgement that will coincide with the 2027 Jonathan Cutler Keogh Memorial Trophy fixture between the Dunedin and University Rugby clubs.

Everyone is welcome to join the team over the weekend — to celebrate their legacy and witness the resurgence of Trinity Catholic College Rugby, a tradition that has its roots in those legendary Kavanagh College sides of old.
