Social Media and Online Safety Information Evening (Year 7 & 8 Parents)

There will be a social media and online safety information evening for parents of students in Year 7 & 8 at Trinity. The session will be held onsite at Trinity Catholic College, and will offer valuable insight and discussion around the challenges that young people face navigating a digital and online world.

When: Thursday, 25th June

Time: 7:00pm (sharp)

Where: Trinity Catholic College Auditorium

The proposed schedule for the evening is as follows:

1. Welcome and Introduction (Andrew Duncan - Year 7 Dean)

• Welcome to parents and caregivers

• Purpose of the evening

• Importance of working together to keep young people safe online

2. Police Perspective: Legal and Illegal Online Behaviour (Eddie Smith - NZ Police Dunedin Schools’ Community Officer)

• What is legal and illegal online

• Why parents need to be curious about their children's Social Media Use

3. Practical Strategies for Parents (Leanne Ross - Former Netsafe Leader and Year 13 Parent)

• How parents can actively monitor and support safe online behaviour

• Managing devices, privacy settings, and screen time

4. School Expectations and Online Safety Policies (Rachel Mortimer - Senior Leadership Team)

• School policies regarding IT use and online safety

• Expectations for students both at school and online

• AI

5. Supporting Student Wellbeing (Ross McKinnon - School Counsellor)

• Support available through the school and external agencies

6. Question and Discussion Time
