Supporting Sporty Girls – A guide for coaches and clubs

By Sport New Zealand | Posted: Wednesday August 23, 2023

As we think about the legacy from the successful FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 tournament, lot of the conversation over the last month has turned to how we can support young women and girls in sport.

Coaches, parents, and other people supporting the sport system have a duty to look after the individual needs of young people in sport and ensure they all have a positive experience. What is sometimes overlooked, however, is that girls have vastly different needs and experiences to boys, and it’s really important to understand what they specifically need in order to thrive in and stay in sport.

Recently, Sport New Zealand released a resource to help with just that: Balanced Female Health. Developed by health professionals in the sport sector, Balanced Female Health is a practical guide for adults supporting young women in sport, covering topics including changes throughout female puberty, the menstrual cycle, and factors that impact young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing.

To help you fully understand and get the most out of the resource, Sport New Zealand is hosting a free webinar next week dedicated to Balanced Female Health and the topics it covers. Join youth sport experts Kelly Curr (Sport Development Consultant at Sport New Zealand) and Kylie Cox (physiotherapist and Director of The Healthy Athlete Project) as they discuss the resource and how to use it, share their insights and practical tips, and answer any questions you might have.

Balanced Female Health forms part of Sport New Zealand’s new Flow on Effect web page, which brings together a range of resources, as well as a new video series, designed to address period inequities and change the conversation around physical activity and menstruation.

We look forward to seeing you there to chat through this important and timely topic!
