Congratulations to Ariel Holloway (Year 13) who found out last week that she’s a finalist in the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Essay Competition.

The topic of Ariel’s essay was “The importance of timing in one of Shakespeare’s plays” and she chose to write about The Comedy of Errors, one of Shakespeare’s early plays. Ariel performed in the Dunedin Summer Shakespeare’s production of The Comedy of Errors earlier this year and so she was able to use this experience to inform her writing.

Here’s how Ariel summarised the main ideas of her essay:

“I wrote about the dramatic tension of the play, how the confusion of the characters escalates, and the audience is constantly on the edge of their seat. I also unpacked how the actors would need to perform the play in order to achieve the best timing, influenced by my own experiences.”

Being named as a finalist means that Ariel has been invited to attend the National Shakespeare Festival in Wellington during King’s Birthday Weekend, along with Trinity’s Love’s Labour’s Lost performance group which won the 5-minute scene at the regional competition.

The winner of the essay competition will be announced during the National Festival. Good luck, Ariel!
