Time to Shine a Light on our Year 7 & 8 Student Stars

This article begins a series celebrating the achievements of our Year 7 and 8 cohort at Trinity Catholic College.
Freya Sutherland (Year 8)
How have you enjoyed sport at Trinity so far Freya? What sports do you play for school?
I am really enjoying sport this year. I play netball and Volleyball.
Outside of school what are your sporting/training commitments?
Netball training and a Thursday game. Lots of extra work at home with mum and dad too.
You recently represented the Te Waipounamu U13 Netball team. Tell us a little bit about this.
It was a real privilege to get in the team. 100 girls trialed for only 13 spots. We had fantastic coaches and the trials and team trainings were a lot of fun. We had some really good games against the U15 team.
What are some challenges you have faced?
Challenges have been some injuries but I've always worked through them and had great support.
Sport is very rewarding, what are some of the highlights you have experienced?
Making the Te Waipounamu team is the major highlight. Making lots of friends too.
Leadership and sportsmanship are very important. If people were to watch you play sport what skills and attributes would they see?
Encouragement of the team and leading by example at all times. Always being positive.
How can students at Trinity show the 4 core school values on the sports field/ court?
Keep positive at all times and try your best. Always be supportive and include this support for your opposition too. Friendships through sports are important.
Who are your role models and why?
Reece Walsh because he is tough and a real competitor.
Favorite pre and post competition foods?
McDonalds to reward myself after a hard game.
If you could give any advice to students wanting to achieve in their chosen sport(s) what would it be?
Be positive and always try your best. When it's hard, keep going because it will get easier.
Thomas McEntyre (Year 7)
How have you enjoyed sport at Trinity so far Thomas? What sports do you play for school?
Really enjoyed things so far, it's been great. There are lots of different choices and also good competition
I play Basketball, Rugby, Touch, Volleyball, and Cricket for Trinity.
Outside of school what are your sporting/training commitments?
I have rugby and cricket training. I also run and go bike riding.
You have represented Otago in cricket and touch. Tell us a little bit about this.
Cricke t- I went to Timaru and Alexandra for tournaments which was fun. I had a top score of 65.
Touch - The tournaments were in Christchurch, Oamaru and Invercargill. I got a sportsmanship award for touch which was voted for by players.
What are some challenges you have faced?
Dealing with getting out in cricket and then I have to wait a whole week to get another go. It makes me want to train harder and do better next time.
Sport is very rewarding, what are some of the highlights you have experienced?
Captain of the Otago touch team has been a real highlight.
I also played my best rugby game against St Peters this year at the Catholic Quad tournament.
Leadership and sportsmanship are very important. If people were to watch you play sport what skills and attributes would they see?
Helping people on the field if they are hurt. Positive talk to everyone. Cheering people on.
Support the opposition too.
How can students at Trinity show the 4 core school values on the sports field/ court?
Be honest at all times. If you knock on a ball while trying to score, tell the referee.
Who are your role models and why?
Kane Williamson. I try to model myself on him. He is a great player.
Richie Mo'unga - Great play maker and kicks well.
Favorite pre and post competition foods?
Weet bix before the match and a mince and cheese pie after.
If you could give any advice to students wanting to achieve in their chosen sport(s) what would it be?
Never give up when you are going through a hard phase.
