Inspiring Guest Speaker for Enviroweek at Trinity!

Enviroweek at Trinity has brought in an inspiring guest speaker!

On Wednesday 29th July, Trinity was given a presentation at assembly by Matt Greene, from the Department of Conservation. His speech and slideshow discussed the current state of the climate crisis, particularly in Aotearoa.

The presentation included information about the harmful gases being released into our precious atmosphere and oceans. In fact, the amount of heat energy being released per second is the equivalent to every single person on earth running 88 microwave ovens at the same time 24 hours a day.

He shared many other mind-blowing statistics and events which emphasised the urge to start taking action against the climate emergency, through all of our daily actions.

While the climate crisis can be intimidating, Matt left an emphasis on a message of hope and encouragement - it's not "too late to act", it's "late, so we have all the more reason to act"!

As an individual, you can work towards a greener earth every day by shopping sustainably (second-hand clothes), recycling, minimising your plastic use, never littering and reducing your CO2 emissions as much as possible by walking, bussing or biking instead of driving.

Mrs Nicholson also reinforced the message that we all hold the power to make positive change by being mindful consumers. Reduce (if not eliminate) your spending on low-quality websites such as Shein or Temu, and support local businesses instead. Matt also strongly encouraged us to talk to our friends and family about taking climate action!

A huge thank you to Matt for willingly taking the time out of his day to speak to the Trinity students about these very prominent issues during Enviroweek.

A student climate strike is happening on Friday 31st July from 12 - 3pm in the Octagon - you can show your support there too!

Students should get their parental permission to leave school delivered to the office via email or phone call. In the instance of rain, hail, or snow, the event will be held on the same date and time in St Paul's Cathedral, directly above the upper Octagon.
