Year 12 PE Catch Their First Waves

Surfing is underway in our PE classes for 2026.
Year 12 Physical Education students headed to the beach this morning for their very first surf lesson as part of their Learning to Learn unit — and what a morning it was. With clear skies, light winds and gentle, rolling waves, the conditions were perfect for building confidence and developing new skills.
Students began the session with expert instruction from the team at Hydro Surf School, who introduced key safety protocols, board handling techniques, positioning, and the fundamentals of popping up. After some guided practice on the sand, it was time to take the learning into the water.
The small, clean waves provided an ideal learning environment, allowing students to focus on timing, balance and body positioning without feeling overwhelmed. It was fantastic to see students supporting one another, celebrating small wins, and applying feedback in real time — all core components of effective motor skill learning.
This surfing experience forms part of a six-lesson sequence. Across the next five sessions, students will explore and apply different types of practice (blocked, distributed, variable), feedback strategies, and key principles of motor skill learning to improve their performance. They will reflect on how learning happens, how skills are refined over time, and how they can transfer these insights into other physical and academic contexts.
A huge thank you to Hydro Surf School for their expertise and support. We’re excited to see the progress over the coming weeks.
Check out the action shots from this morning - plenty of proud first rides and big smiles!
