The Assumption of Mary

The Assumption of Mary is celebrated by the Catholic Church on 15 August. It remembers the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken body and soul into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. This feast is significant because it reminds Catholics of Mary’s special role in God’s plan and gives hope that, through Christ, believers are also called to eternal life with God. It is a celebration of Mary’s faith, love and complete trust in God.

Mary, Our Lady of the Assumption, is the patroness of New Zealand, alongside St Peter Chanel, St Mary MacKillop, and Blessed Suzanne Aubert, who are also important saints and religious figures here in Aotearoa.

Prayer to Our Lady of the Assumption

Mary, Our Lady of the Assumption,

we ask you to watch over and guide

the students, staff and families of Trinity Catholic College.

Help our school community to grow in faith, compassion, kindness and love for one another.

Guide us to follow the example of Jesus

and to always look for ways to help those around us.

We pray also for Aotearoa New Zealand.

Watch over our people, our communities and our leaders.

Help us to respect one another, care for our land, and work together for peace and unity.

Mary, lead us closer to your Son, Jesus,

and keep Trinity Catholic College and New Zealand under your loving care.

Amen.
