Community Languages of New Zealand

Last month we celebrated two languages officially referred to as community languages of New Zealand.

At the beginning of August we celebrated Te Reo Maori Kuki Airani - Cook Island Maori Language week where we had the privilege of having Te Turama i te Ara who are our local community Cook Islands Performing Arts group. In a fun way they taught us some Cook Islands words and had a dance competition with students and staff. The best hip swinging award had to go to Mr Duncan.

Nearing the end of August we had Tongan Language Week. Throughout the week students wore special attire called a ta’ovala or kiekie and on Friday they wore a Tongan inspired outfit.
