Peel Forest Adventure for Year 11 PE

Our Year 11 Physical Education Camp to Peel Forest was an unforgettable experience, filled with challenge, adventure, and a strong focus on kotahitanga (unity), which has been the central theme of our unit this term.

We set off on Wednesday, full of anticipation, and began our camp with a hike up Little Mount Peel. Despite some early concerns about cloud cover and the possibility of missing out on the view, our perseverance paid off. Over half of the class successfully summited, and in a rewarding twist, we broke through the clouds to be greeted by a stunning view above them, an incredible moment that made the tough climb worthwhile.

That evening, we took part in a series of games designed to strengthen our class Kotahitanga. These activities encouraged teamwork, communication, and trust, helping to bring everyone closer together as a group.

Thursday morning greeted us with less than ideal weather, but the rain did nothing to dampen the students’ positive attitudes and enthusiasm. The group tackled high ropes and orienteering in wet conditions, showing resilience and courage throughout. It was fantastic to see students stepping outside their comfort zones, conquering fears, and supporting one another every step of the way.

Friday brought what many considered the highlight of the camp, white water rafting on the lower Rangitata River. The experience was packed with laughter and excitement, from navigating tricky sections where we occasionally got stuck to a few unexpected tumbles out of the raft. While some swims were part of the plan, others came as a surprise, adding to the adventure. Despite these, it was a hugely enjoyable and memorable way to wrap up the trip.

All too soon, the camp came to an end. It was an awesome few days away, filled with memorable experiences and meaningful connections. This outstanding group of students not only had a fantastic time but now also have plenty of experiences to draw on for their first PE internal assessment.

A big thank you goes to Iris, Richard McNaught, Gemma Wilson and Nathan Cooper who supported us throughout the camp, we couldn’t have done it without you. Overall, the camp was a huge success, and we are incredibly proud of the way our students embraced every opportunity with positivity, resilience, and unity.
