Game of Three Halves and Christchurch Super Round

Our Junior Rugby team is travelling to Christchurch on Friday for what will be an epic weekend of footy and fun. Te Kaha One NZ Stadium will host five Super Rugby Pacific matches as the entire competition descends on the South Island. Super Round 2026 brings three days of world class rugby to Ōtautahi (Christchurch). Fans from across New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the Pacific will come together at the brand new Te Kaha One NZ Stadium.

On Anzac Day, Trinity Catholic College will play St Bede's College and St Thomas of Canterbury College in a Game of Three Halves hosted by St Thomas' in Riccarton. How does that work you might ask? Well, each school plays a 30-minute half against each school in 90-minute overall game. That's it and here's the format on Saturday afternoon: STB vs STC; STC vs TCC; TCC vs STB.

Now for some rugby history, in 1995 old boys Chris Burke, Tony McEntyre and Hamish Sutherland played together in the Kavanagh College 1st XV. The following year Tony and Hamish played an interschool vs St Thomas' on the Br Dowling Field where our lads will be playing on Saturday. Ant Harris was a member of the 1st XV 1999 - 2000 and on a South Island tour in 2004, former head boy and 1st XV captain, Ox Eathorne, also locked horns with the St Thomas 1st's. Following in their father's footsteps, Jack, Thomas, Charlie, Zak and Max will be pulling on the navy and burgundy jersey this weekend.

After the rugby the team are booked into the new $500 million Parakiore Aquatic Centre for a two-hour hydroslide session. The team will attend Mass at St Mary and St Francis de Sales Church, Rangiora on Sunday morning then will return to town for poppy laying ceremony at the Bridge of Remembrance. En route to Te Kaha, the team will follow the official fan trail along Cashel Street that starts from the fan zone in the central city. There will be live performers and entertainment bringing the energy and pre-game vibes.

The Crusaders will play the opener on Friday night against the NSW Waratahs and the Highlanders will clash with Moana Pasifika on Sunday afternoon. The team will be attending this game with coaches, teachers and whānau. It will be the first time the Super Round has been held in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Lastly a huge thank you to the coaches, teachers and parents for making this pre-season trip possible. The team is looking forward to the weekend and the season which starts on 9 May vs John McGlashan College.
