As part of our Outdoor Education programme, students recently set off from Trinity Catholic College to experience one of Dunedin’s most iconic and accessible cycling routes - the Ōtākou Harbour Cycleway (Te Aka Ōtākou / The Otago Vine).

The ride took students from school Macandrew Bay via the Harbour Cycleway.

Highlights of the ride included navigating the shared paths through the harbour area, riding past the teeth, Vauxhall and along the Peninsula connection, coastal views across the harbour toward the Port Hills and Peninsula landscapes, and finishing in the Macandrew Bay area.

The terrain was mostly flat and off-road, making it an ideal environment for developing confidence and endurance on bikes, while still requiring awareness of shared-use etiquette and safe riding practices.

This ride also served as a preparation experience for our upcoming mountain biking sessions. Students will build on the skills developed on the Harbour Cycleway and apply them to more technical terrain at Redwoods and Signal Hill.
