Otago Hockey Awards

A couple of our Trinity Students - Beth White (Year 10) and Jonathan Duncan (Year 7) - were recognised recently at the Otago Hockey Association end of season awards. Beth has shared some words below.......

This was my first year umpiring hockey, and I started in late May doing high school full field, which I’m still doing now. In early August I umpired my first club game (adults) and I have done a couple since. I was lucky enough to get the div 3 woman plate final for club, the game was University Puffins verses University Otters. It was very cool getting my first club final which I umpired with my dad. Unfortunately we had to pause the game to swap out the goals as they were being blown away in the heavy wind. I’ve also been asked to train new, young umpires next year, this should be an amazing opportunity to help encourage young umpires, just like other umpires that have helped and encouraged me this year.

Our Junior Sport Coordinator Megan Reid, has added the following;

"Beth started her umpiring journey this year with Otago Hockey. Umpiring runs in the family with Beth's father, mother and brother already being keen umpires. Throughout the year Beth has been umpiring school and club hockey and even managed to be selected to umpire the women's plate final. Next year Beth is going to use the knowledge she has acquired to train and upskill new umpires.

On Wednesday 21st October at the Otago Hockey Awards Beth was awarded Junior Hockey Umpire of the Year for her commitment to umpiring hockey.

"Well done Beth, keep up the great work."

Jonathan Duncan played hockey this season and also umpired games on a Wednesday evening. His amazing efforts won him two trophies at the end of season awards - The Most Improved Player for the Year 7/8 'Blue Boys' 11-side team, and a trophy for his umpiring services to hockey. What a brilliant season for this talented young man.

Well done Beth and Jonathan. A great season for you both!
