12PE took on the challenge of completing an Inferno Hot Pilates class this week.
As part of our new unit exploring different methods of training, principles of training, and exercise physiology, Year 12 PE students stepped outside the classroom and into a real-world learning environment at Hot Yoga Dunedin Studio, taking part in an Inferno Hot Pilates class.
This session provided students with an authentic introduction to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in a different training environment. The heated studio added an extra physiological challenge, requiring students to manage fatigue, hydration, pacing, and mental focus while still maintaining movement quality and control.
Throughout the class, students worked through a range of functional exercises including glute bridge variations, core sets, squats, burpees, and planks. The combination of continuous movement, structured intervals, and heat created a demanding session that clearly linked to concepts of overload, specificity, and adaptation.
There was plenty for students to unpack afterwards, particularly around how the body responds to training stress, how intensity can be manipulated across environments, and how recovery strategies become even more important when working at higher physiological loads. Despite the challenge, students embraced the experience and showed engagement throughout.
Students will continue to explore training in real-world contexts. Upcoming opportunities include visiting Les Mills for a Ceremony training session, engaging with other local fitness facilities, and participating in our own school-based run club, designed to build aerobic capacity through continuous training methods.
Exciting times ahead as students connect theory to practice and further their understanding of how training principles apply across a range of fitness environments.
